Scholarships available for Ky. high school teachers to attend cybersecurity conference

Up to 20 scholarships available

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 10, 2016) – Up to 20 Kentucky high school teachers will receive scholarships to attend cybersecurity educational training in Texas through a partnership program between Technology Association of Louisville Kentucky (TALK) and the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center (NICERC).

The Kentucky Computer Science Teachers Association will identify up to 20 high school teachers across the state to be offered the opportunity to attend the 2016 Education Discovery Forum www.edf2016.com in Dallas, Texas, on July 18.  Educators can also apply for travel expenses. Interested Kentucky educators should email dawny@talklou.com.

The Education Discovery Forum (EDF) is a week-long professional development workshop for high school teachers, which gives them a dynamic, hands-on training in implementing innovative, project-driven, multi-disciplinary curricula surrounding Cyber Literacy.

Educators also have opportunity to connect with NICERC subject matter experts and experience new ways to engage today’s students. Throughout the forum, teachers take a ‘deep dive’ into the content thus providing them with a greater understanding of the curriculum design process, projects and opportunities for implementation.

The Education Discovery Forum is being held at the Embassy Suites Dallas Frisco Hotel Convention Center in Dallas, TX, on July 18-22, 2016.

NICERC chose Kentucky to receive 20 full scholarships for high school teachers as part of its national initiative to provide more cybersecurity information in U.S. school systems. The Education Discovery Forum in Dallas will present information including potential school curricula with worksheets. Participant Kentucky teachers can help to “seed” a cybercluster that TALK plans to create in the Louisville area, said Dawn Yankeelov, TALK chairwoman.

TALK is a non-profit tech council that works to develop and deliver STEM education, improve local workforce development in technology fields, and attract technology companies to Louisville. TALK is a member of CompTIA (The IT Industry Association), and TECNA (Technology Councils of North America).

NICERC was created by the Cyber Innovation Center to advance its academic outreach and workforce development program. NICERC focuses on curriculum design, professional development, and collaboration in K-12 education. The impact of NICERC is the creation of a Cyber Interstate that allows individuals to ‘enter and exit’ at various points throughout their academic and professional careers. A Cyber Interstate provides multiple opportunities for students to become aware of cyber issues (enhance awareness), engage in cyber education (expand the pipeline), and select cyber careers.
